Ahoy CHESSSmates!

With the 2026 Annapolis to Bermuda Ocean Race approaching (June 5th start), I wanted to provide you with a comprehensive overview of what's required for those considering entering as a double-handed boat. CHESSS is committed to supporting our members taking on this offshore challenge, and we're working diligently to ensure robust participation and assistance for all interested sailors.

Registration is now open! https://yachtscoring.com/emenu/50382

Requirements & Deadlines:

For double-handed crews, both sailors must hold valid Safety at Sea certificates (within 5 years) and current CPR/First Aid certification. Safety at Sea certifications are earned through a two part process. First by completing US Sailing's online course SAS https://www.ussailing.org/education/adult/safety-at-sea-courses-2022/. Then through attending a one day in person training session hosted by the Marine Traders Association of Maryland https://mtam.org/safety-at-sea Safety equipment requirements remain the same regardless of crew size - including life raft capacity for all crew, AIS, proper jacklines, and the full complement of navigation and emergency equipment detailed in the safety requirements.

Your boat will require inspection for compliance with the A2B Safety Equipment Requirements by June 4th. The keel/rudder structural inspection form must be submitted by May 15th. Don't forget the mandatory check-in at Eastport Yacht Club on June 4th between 11:00 and 15:00.

Entry fees are based on your boat's LOA: $39/foot if paid by December 31, 2025; $44/foot by March 31, 2026; and $49/foot thereafter.

Upcoming Events:

November 15, 2025 - 9AM to 3PM:

Safety & Boat Preparation Seminar at Eastport Yacht Club - register at https://www.bermudaoceanrace.com/safety-seminar

Two demonstration boats will be tied up at EYC, each one fully kitted and prepared as though the race was the next day!

CHESSS has assembled resources to help members navigate the entry process, arrange for inspections, coordinate safety training, and connect sailors looking for double-handed partners. We're actively working with other double-handed entrants to ensure sufficient participation. Early commitment helps strengthen our collective position!

If you're considering this adventure, please reach out to me directly. The sooner we know your intentions, the better we can coordinate group preparations, shared resources, and mutual support.

Fair winds,
