Racing: General Discussion

Insurance no longer covering racing
Author Last Post

BoatUS/Geico would not insure our boat because of its age. I purchased insurance from Progressive without any problems including hull coverage. I talked with them when I first heard of the Geico issue. If the primary use of the boat is recreational there is no exclusion for occasional racing. I maintain the boat in “cruising” condition and equipment and do not expect any problems. If I plan to go more than 75miles offshore or to a country other than US or Canada I will need to buy a rider for the additional coverage. They also include “Sign & Glide” towing service and pay the provider directly.

My insurance is through BoatUS/Geico. It used to be the insurance policy excluded powerboat racing. Now with the renewal that exclusion extends to sailboat racing. You can purchase an endorsement to cover sailboat racing. For me, that cost is 2/3 of the basic insurance. Not good.
